THE WAVE

On March 15, 2022, the Bureau of Land Management implemented a new mobile-based geofence system for obtaining daily lottery permits to hike at the geologic feature known as “the Wave,” within Coyote Buttes North, Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, this new system is called the Coyote Buttes North Daily Lottery (The Wave).

All permits to hike in Coyote Buttes North will be issued via an online lottery held by recreation.gov. For more information and to get started click here.

At a minimum, the Wave is a six-mile round-trip strenuous hike in a remote wilderness location with no clearly marked trail and very little shade. We recommend you start your hike early in the day and pack a gallon of water per person, plenty of salty snacks, sunscreen, and proper footwear. Make sure that everyone in your group is capable of completing the journey.

Applying for permits for Coyote Buttes South is also now run by The Bureau of Land Management online at www.recreation.gov. This is a remote wilderness area that requires a 4 x 4 high clearance vehicle to access. 2WD and AWD vehicles are not acceptable and WILL get stuck. You must be comfortable driving in deep sand and navigating a remote wilderness area. Ten people are allowed to visit Coyote Buttes South per day.
